In the business of upgrading the planet.

As oil refinery veterans and chemistry PhDs, we know the tough questions to ask for a better tomorrow:

How do we avoid more drilling, transporting and refining?
What raw materials are above-ground and abundant everywhere?
What kinds of sustainable, biodegradable products offer the most value? To whom?
Can we build a thriving business manufacturing and delivering premium products?

Asking these questions led us down many paths. But there was only one clear front-runner: long-chain hydrocarbons.

We spent decades designing and building the Kata Metabolizer—a mini-refinery no bigger than a few basketball courts that can be quickly placed anywhere in the world.

We could have built more oil refineries. Or made yet another crude-oil derived product. But we didn’t.

Long-chain hydrocarbons free of crude-oil impurities.

Long-chain hydrocarbons free of crude-oil impurities.

Biodegradable. High-performance. Deeply versatile. Long-chain hydrocarbons are sometimes referred to as Mineral Oil or Paraffin Wax. They are in our make-up and baby lotions, used in food processing plants, and sprayed on farms to protect our fruits and vegetables from disease.

They are the reason face cream moisturizes your skin; they let organically certified farms make produce last longer; and they keep a sailboat’s equipment lubricated without harming marine life.

But producing them is expensive and environmentally damaging. And using them isn’t harmless either.

As a highly-refined crude oil product, mineral oil and paraffin wax begin their journey at remote oil wells and are then shipped around the world.

Huge, energy-intensive refineries purify the crude oil using multiple high-heat/high-pressure steps. It’s shipped, refined, then shipped and refined again.

Final outputs, which can have crude oil trace elements of sulfur and heavy metals, are again transported, this time to manufacturers, resellers, and, finally, delivered to customers.

Mineral oil and paraffin wax production incurs steep economic costs and inflicts serious environmental damage. This long and wasteful process destroys habitats, pollutes the air and water streams, and releases climate-changing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Production isn’t slowing any time soon. In fact, it is projected to expand by 5% every year, for the foreseeable future. This will come at an increased cost—to our planet and to customers.

Kata has invented a better way.

We adhere to the Green Chemistry framework of Materials Metabolism. And we believe it’s the blueprint for humanity’s continued use of precious raw materials.

Highly-refined hydrocarbon feedstock
Kata products don’t use crude oil as its feedstock. We take an existing resource that is above-ground, abundantly available all over the world, and already a highly refined hydrocarbon, like, for example, plastics.

2.
Kata Metabolizer
Using the energy contained within the feedstock itself, we metabolize this refined hydrocarbon into molecular chains of varying lengths. The process is so efficient it generates zero emissions, zero waste and zero run off.

Premium Kata products
Unlike harsh Chemical Recycling or energy-intensive Pyrolysis, we don’t break the polymers of our feedstock down into its constituent monomers. The Kata Metabolizer maintains the longer molecular chains and organizes them into oil, grease, and wax.
